When you speak it’s Amdavad, Isn’t it ? But when you write, legally it’s written as ‘Ahmedabad’.
It all started in 2010 when the AMC changed their boards from ‘Ahmedabad Municipal Corportation’ to ‘Amdavad Municipal Corporation’. They changed the english spelling to ‘Amdavad’ in their Logo.
People started seeing the new Spelling of ‘Ahmedabad’ everywhere on streets. AMC changed the spelling without any legal steps and even today legally it’s called ‘Ahmedabad’ and not ‘Amdavad’.
The billboards at Ahmedabad International Airport, railway station, inter-state bus terminus and at other public places, have been changed with ‘Amdavad’.
When asked about this to Myor Asit Vora, he said ‘We have not changed the name of the city. We just spell it the way it is spoken’.
- ‘Amdavad’ is called ‘Ahmedabad’ by everyone who knows about the city but it’s called ‘Amdavad’ only by true ‘Amdavadis’.
We Guajarati’s like to pronounce words which requires less ‘Lips Meeting’.
- ‘Program’ becomes ‘Pogram’
- ‘Tuition’ becomes ‘Tusan’.
- ‘Station’ becomes ‘Tason’
- ‘Office’ becomes ‘Hoffis’.
- ‘Risk’ becomes ‘Riks’
- ‘Friends’ becomes ‘Firendo’.
- ‘Fast’ becomes ‘Phaas’.
- ‘Cheese’ becomes ‘Cheej’
- ‘Problem’ becomes ‘Poblem’.
- ‘Sauce’ becomes ‘Sos’.
- ‘Diesel’ becomes ‘Deejhal’.
- ‘Visa’ becomes ‘Vijha’ and many more…..
Not everyone speaks like this, but its treat to listen when they(We) do and I am proud of that.
