Let’s us know the Facts : International Day of Zero Waste
Every Minute, the equivalent of one garbage truck of plastic is dumped into the ocean
More than 75 percent of all electronic waste is note safety managed.
If food loss and waste were a country, it would be the third biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions.
Resource extraction is responsible for half of the World’s carbon emissions.
The amount of municipal solid waste generated globally could rise from around 2.24 Billion tons to 3.88 billion tons by 2050.
Now Look on the History : International Day of Zero Waste
On 14 December 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution at its 77th Session to proclaim 30 March as International Day of Zero Waste, to be observed annually.
Turkey with 105 other countries put forward the resolution. It follows other resolutions focused on waste and ‘end plastic pollution‘
Promoting Zero – Waster initiatives through this International day can help advance all the goals and targets in the 2030 agenda for sustainable development, including sustainable development goal 11 and sustainable development goal 12. These goals address all forms of waste, including food loss and waste, natural resource extraction and electronic waste.
Significance : International Day of Zero Waste
The International Day of Zero Waste aims to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns and raise awareness about how zero-waste initiatives contribute to the advancement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Humanity generated an estimated 2.24 billions tons of municipal solid waste annually, of which only 55 per cent is managed in controlled facilities. By 2050, this could rise to 3.88 billions tons per year.
Waste sector is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in urban settings and biodiversity loss.
