National Panchayati Raj Day is celebrated on 24th April every year in India. The Most significant aspect of this day is the diversification of political power in the hands of common men.

A Committee under the chairmanship of Balavantrai Mehta in 1957 recommended the democratic decentralization of power. The Committee recommended a 3 tier Panchayati Raj System in the country; Gram Panchayat (at the Village level), Panchayat Samiti (at Block level) & Jila Parishad (at District level), Rajasthan was the first state in the country where the Panchayati Raj system was implemented. 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1992 which came into force on 24th April 1993 to reinforcing Panchayati Raj. A separate Ministry of Panchayati Raj was constituted on 27th May 2004, in order to supervise it. The National Panchayati Day is observed in the country since 24th April 2010.
There was 2.54 lakhs Panchayats in our country, out of which 2.47 lakh are gram panchayats, 6283 are block Panchayats and 595 are district Panchaya.
